This soothed my heart and spoke to my soul. I lost my brother on Good Friday this year and was doing the very thing, listening to the birds and Merlin, on an east facing deck, on an organic farm in southeastern Saskatchewan (Douglaston organic, outside of alameda , Sk.)
Well ya got me in the feels with this one!
My back deck is my little sanctuary. I love the privacy the little brook behind us gives and listening to all birds that make their homes there. I had no idea how many varieties there were until you told me about the Merlin Bird app back in March, shortly before the passing of my dear MIL. I watched this post while Inara was napping, and it gave me goosebumps. As I have recently retired, and life has slowed down some, I have more opportunity to spend time on my deck listening to the birds and use Merlin almost daily, sometime multiple times a day. In all the times I have used it, I did not notice the spelling of Mourning Dove! After Inara’s nap, we were on the back deck doing “chalk” nail manicures and she looked up and asked me what bird she was looking at. I assumed from where she was sitting, she was seeing a hummingbird. She said No Grammy! Up top! I looked up on our roof and there was a Mourning Dove!
Thank you to Sue and Vera for sharing this simple story of the simple beauty of our land and my more than humans, reminding us how valuable they are!
Thank you, Mourning Dove…
