Hi Everyone! We hope many of you will be able to attend The View from the Edge of the World at the Art Gallery of Regina in person, but understand this is not always possible. So, through this space we will begin to bring some of it to you.
Our installation is built on “noticing”, a theme we often think about. We wanted to create a meditative space for the viewer to spend time considering their own relationship with the land by encouraging “slow looking”. We believe that the more time spent looking, the more you notice - similar to how we feel about spending time in the natural world. And, we also want to encourage conversation while sitting at a real kitchen table similar to the virtual one we offer here.
When you enter the space, one of the first things you will see is the image above - imagine it as 5x5 feet hanging on the wall in front of you. It is difficult not to notice at that size but as you look around this image is found once again - a small 3in x 3in print seen below.
During our time working together, both Sue and I have taken many notes while reading. These are a couple of quotes from my notebook.
We are part of, not separate from. It never hurts to pause for a second to remember this.
Reponses
It is always great to hear from you either here (click the green button below) or through the comment book at the gallery. We always hope our work will move others in some way and when those responses are shared with us, it has special meaning. We were particularly thrilled to receive this video of Karen Martin’s free-flow, improvisational singing in response to our art. So moving. What a gift! When I hear this I imagine a song back to the land. Our heartfelt thanks to Karen for agreeing to let us share her gift with you.
We are open to responses of all kinds -maybe draw a pic, write a few words, share a story. How does the work here or at the gallery speak to you? Click this green comment button to leave us a message or email us.
Thank you to the Art Gallery of Regina for this opportunity and SK Arts for their financial support.
Though we ( Vera - my dearest friend of 33 years - and I ) are separated by many provinces now, I'm so very grateful to be able to experience your beautiful work through these snippets of prose, poetry and stunning photography. How incredibly moving that your and Sue's work inspired the most beautiful vocal appreciation. Thank you for sharing all the wonder in your world. You both should be very proud.❤️
I had been missing yous these past couple of days and here you are 💗 this show brought soul back home...all the threads of my life joined into one river, and emptying out into the ocean of me..that simple moment sitting on the tin roof of that red cattle shed in the coral watching the sunset over the pastures, at age six...smelling THAT cool air scented with northern boreal bush mixed with faint manure, seeing THAT orange endless sun against the black backdrop of twilight, feeling the hard, cool of metal beneath my body, the deadening sound of deep quiet intermixed with soft crickets...this is the moment I hope my spirit returns to when my body has finished its time here, and it is the similar soul-return-home I felt standing before, and breathing in your photo wall...felt it from heart, to throat, and deep deep down in at the centre of me. Thank you Karen, also, for expressing this in such a sanguine tangible way...that words simply can’t 💖
